The Project: Coffee for Conservation
The Los Amigos del Oso (friends of the bear) project is an expansion of the original "El Oso" initiative, designed to protect the delicate ecosystems near the Santuario Nacional Tabaconas Namballe in San Ignacio. This coffee is grown within the buffer zones of the sanctuary - a vital habitat for the spectacled bear and other native species facing the threat of extinction.
By purchasing this coffee, you are supporting a project that bridges the gap between agricultural production and environmental protection. The cooperative provides farmers with native forest trees to plant alongside coffee seedlings, ensuring the local flora and fauna can thrive within a working farm environment.
Sustainable Farming & Processing
This coffee is grown at high altitudes ranging from 1,350 to 1,890 masl, which allows the cherries to develop a complex profile. The producers utilize an organic methodology to foster a culture of wildlife protection.
To improve cup quality while minimizing environmental impact, the project provides farmers with:
-
Solar Tents: For controlled, clean drying of the beans
-
Fermentation Drums: 200-liter drums to ensure consistency in the washed process
-
Composting Warehouses: Utilizing discarded coffee cherries to create organic fertilizer, reducing waste and the need for external chemical inputs
Origin: Cajamarca, Peru
Producer: Various small-holder farmers
Varieties: Typica, Caturra, Mundo Novo, Bourbon, Catimor, Imperial, Pache, Catuai
Altitude: 1,350 - 1,890 metres above sea level
