Sumatra Mandheling Grade 1 Double Picked
This Sumatra Mandheling coffee is a classic example of high-quality Indonesian coffee, known for its low acidity, heavy body and distinctive earthy character. Grown in the Mandailing region of North Sumatra, this Grade 1 lot has been double picked, meaning the beans are hand-sorted twice to improve uniformity and reduce defects. This results in a cleaner, more consistent cup when compared with standard Sumatra coffee offerings.
Origin and Processing
Sumatra’s humid climate makes traditional washed processing difficult, so the coffee is prepared using the local wet-hulling method (Giling Basah). This technique removes the parchment while the beans still retain moisture, producing the familiar deep, rounded profile associated with Mandheling coffee. The volcanic soils and high altitudes further contribute to its rich, full-bodied character.

Slightly fruitier than my usual go to bean, very refreshing
In spite of the descriptions, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. And this turned out to be the case, as I was very surprised by a note of something herbal, almost as if there were one little lavender blossom in the coffee. And that doesn’t really describe it — a flavour of something possibly oily or like tar, but just enough to make you pause and think what a complex blend of aromas and taste. Floral and gritty.. Quite magical.
