Mbili Twiga – A Coffee That Brings People Together

Mbili Twiga, meaning "two giraffes," is a coffee that symbolises unity and collaboration. Sourced from Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions, this unique blend is the result of smallholder farmers and estates working together to produce exceptional coffee. With nearly 90% of Tanzania’s coffee grown by farmers with less than a hectare of land, the cooperative model plays a crucial role in sustaining and improving coffee cultivation.

This washed coffee is a blend of Bourbon (N39) and Kent varieties, both of which have a long history in Tanzania. Introduced by French missionaries and Indian growers, these beans have been selectively cultivated for their drought tolerance and exceptional flavour. Grown at altitudes ranging from 1400 to 1800 metres above sea level, the coffee benefits from fertile volcanic soil and ideal growing conditions, producing a bright, complex cup with depth and character.

The careful processing method enhances the coffee’s clean and refined taste. Cherries are hand-picked at peak ripeness before being fermented, washed, and dried on raised beds. At Karatu Estate, nestled within the Ngorongoro Crater, shade from umbrella acacias and nutrient-rich volcanic soil contribute to the coffee’s distinctive profile. Smallholder farmers in Rombo, Kilimanjaro, follow traditional home-processing methods, ensuring that each bean is handled with care before it is graded and sorted.
